Volle Zustimmung!

So?

The SS is not the regular military.
That he was only 17 should be taken into account, but it was still his decision. For him to hush this up, only come out with this now (I guess there's a new book being published) should get him a Heuchler award of some kind. 'Beating a tin drum' should henceforth be a phrase to describe hypocritical political ass-hattery - I think it sounds catchy.

Yes we can overlook everything. There is always some excuse. He was not responsible.

Still the hypocrisy he has displayed cannot be overlooked. Like so many Germans he has built his moral superiority on a mountain of shifting sand.

"Dirty linen was quickly washed clean, with people being absolved of all responsibility. Counterfeiters were subsequently busy coining new expressions and putting them into circulation. Unconditional surrender was changed to "collapse". Although in business, law and in the rapidly re-emerging schools and universities, even the diplomatic service, many former National Socialists maintained their hereditary wealth, stayed in office, continued to hold on to their university chairs and eventually continued their careers in politics, it was claimed that we were starting from "zero hour" or square one. A particularly infamous distortion of facts can be seen even today in speeches and publications, with the crimes perpetrated by Germans described as "misdeeds perpetrated in the name of the German people"."

I trust that since Herr Grass has been so vocal in his concern about human rights and alleged violations by the USA and other nations, he will follow up on his convictions and turn himself in to the appropriate authorities to face charges of crimes against humanity. I won't be holding my breath though.

"Lizas Welt" über Grass! Bitte lesen!

http://lizaswelt.blogspot.com/

Grass is such a putz that if it only weren't for this SS "Beziehung" I would have hoped that we would ignore this "linker Hund".

The Günter Ass case is further evidence for my contention that, because they were neither decidedly brought to justice after the 2. W.W. nor have decidedly brought themselves to justice since then, the Germans are still a fundamentally morally ill people and this is the real reason for their ongoing inability to become a “normal“people. G.G. is one of the worst exponents of that all-pervading anti-American, good human-being, good-German mentality of the old and new German Republic.

Username franfine not fanfine!

For those who believe he didn't know he was joining the SS, I have a bridge in Brooklyn I'd like to sell.

Sigh. Can't anybody be bothered with research anymore? Grass didn't "promote the legend that he was just a Flakhelfer". His version until now was that he was first a Flakhelfer, and then was drafted to serve in the military - which was technically correct, but incomplete. A few years back, in a Spiegel interview, he even described details of his training as a tank gunner - which anyone not as oblivious to military matters as the interviewer then will recognize as having nothing to do with Flakhelfer duties.
Now I'm no friend of Grass. His high-horse moralism always got on my nerves. But I find the reactions to this revelation quite telling (and amusing.)

Sigh, just as telling and amusing as your reaction, dear tobyr. :-)

This...keeps getting better.
It seems that Grass' rather sudden pains of conscious precede the disclosure of archived info to the public:

http://www.ksta.de/html/artikel/1155449774481.shtml

How extra-ordinarily coincidental.

The article is pure speculation - all "might have". But funny to see how the notoriously lying and distorting German media suddenly become very dependable...
In any case it is highly unlikely that information from this particular archive would have surfaced without Grass' consent. Then again, one could have probably determined his SS membership long ago by doing some background research. In the interview I mentioned, he provided the timeframe and the location of his training IIRC, which might already have narrowed it down enough to determine his unit.
Furthermore, the "previously unknown documents obtained by SPIEGEL" which proved that he freely admitted his SS membership to his American captors in 1945 were likely present in the former WASt for ages - just nobody bothered to look. Then again, people who translate "Ladeschütze" as "marksman" (not that the American authorities hit the 'mark' any better with "Rifleman", but they have a better excuse with the language barrier) probably can't be bothered to do basic historical research.
Personally, I am leaning to the "PR stunt for his new book" interpretation that a Polish newspaper speculated upon. Grass is, if nothing else, an attention whore.

I like tobyr's word "attention whore". And Ulrich Wickert is the mother of the whore, when he recommended to read his book instead of giving an explanation, why so late.
