The "Coordinator of German-American Cooperation" is not an SPD party post but a German foreign office post. It was created on a bilateral basis in the early days of the Reagan era, and maybe some of the American readers can tell whether the counterpart post does still exist in the US State Department.

In 1999 Joschka Fischer gave the post to one of his closest companions from the good old Frankfurt days. Though the career party functionary Karsten Voigt never has been a Molotow cocktail radical himself, he probably could be one of the most important witnesses regarding Joschka Fischer's involvement into anarchist terrorism in the mid-1970s, but his allocation to an indispensable post has made him abstain from any participation in domestic political debate. The publicity profile of the Amerikakoordinator in Germany media is virtually nonexistent, he works for foreign consumption only.
