"Welt" Writer Reaches New Anti-American Heights / "Welt"-Autor erklimmt Gipfel des Anti-Amerikanismus

Anti-Americanism can be found everywhere in the German media – in print and in electronic media, in leftist or rightist media.

However, nowhere is soul-destroying Anti-Americanism presented more idiotically and celebrated more joyously than in the German media’s feature essay sections. Journalistic preoccupation with things cultural obviously promotes lust for spreading even the most dim-witted Anti-American excesses, albeit embedded in the floweriest of prose.

Take, for example, the following extracts from an article by Hanns-Georg Rodek in the culture section of the conservative (!) daily newspaper “Die Welt”:

The Vision Has Dulled in God’s Country: "Land of Plenty" and "Terminal", New Wenders and Spielberg Movies.

Sixteen months ago George Bush, part Top Gun and part Jesus Christ, landed on an aircraft carrier and proclaimed “Mission Accomplished.” These pictures could possibly have become those that shaped the image of this war in the world’s consciousness, but nine months later Lynndie England and her consorts destroyed that possibility with their pictures of naked, humiliated prisoners.

The drunken excesses by a few flipped-out petty criminals in uniform have attained, in the German media, an historical dimension equivalent to the overthrow of a violent regime of mass murderers.

…the smoke from the bombs exploding each new day in Iraq threatens to obscure, in our minds, … the image of the burning twin towers. …

Hmm…the lunatic attacks by murderous Iraqi terrorists obscure, “in our minds,” the memories of 9/11. An incisive bit of logic – the more terror, the sooner we lose our memories of 9/11.

If there is any hope left, then it lies beyond the Moloch, beyond the insanity of big business and uncontrolled development, amongst the people in the trailer park in Death Valley, people who have nothing now and who will never get anything…

This seems to be more about the Moloch of Anti-Americanism amongst German journalists.

By contrast Steven Spielberg puts himself into the center of contemporary events, in a terminal in New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport. It is impossible to think of a more accurate synonym for contemporary America. Everyone is always in motion, the transportation system becomes home, people are reduced to duty free shop customers, the airport serves as an outlet for the good and bad and the airplane serves as the expression of American power and vulnerability. …

This passage may not be commented upon. Any commentary from an outsider would seriously hurt this passage’s indescribable stupidity.

… but the story is in fact about undesirable outsiders finding solidarity … against an ‘America First’ ideology of permanent fear that is, a priori, suspicious of all things foreign. … the surveillance and supervision system that Spielberg elaborately shows demands suspicious foreigners just like the Pentagon’s interrogation system demanded the likes of Lynndie England.

The only issue here is the permanent fear of leftist German journalists who are, a priori, suspicious of all things American. “…the Pentagon’s interrogation system demanded the likes of Lynndie England” is more about the German media’s paranoid Anti-American perception and blaming system that demands the likes of Hanns-Georg Rodek.

… the image that America now presents did not encourage him (Victor) to stay. This is surely the dichotomy that many of America’s friends are experiencing today. (emphasis added)

The ultimate in Anti-Americanism: the author clothes himself as a friend to the Americans in order to give his hate filled tirades a special degree of credibility.

And what did he have to leave behind on his path to this new height of Anti-Americanism? The heaviest bags were those containing his journalistic credibility and his common sense.

Update: Hilarious! Niko - in a comment - makes us aware of the ultimate blunder of Mr. Rodek: "The irony of Hanns-Georg Rodek's 'article' being that the real story behind Spielberg's flick features an Iranian-British asylum seeker who's stuck at the Charles-De-Gaulle-Airport in France."

Anti-Amerikanismus findet sich flächendeckend in den deutschen Medien - in Print-Medien oder elektronischen Medien, in linken oder in konservativen Medien.

Nirgendwo aber wird Anti-Amerikanismus so nervtötend idiotisch präsentiert und zelebriert wie in den Feuilletons deutscher Medien. Die journalistische Beschäftigung mit Kultur fördert offenbar die Lust an der Verbreitung auch noch der schwachsinnigsten anti-amerikanischen Ausschweifungen, eingebettet in blumigste Formulierungen.

Wie in diesem Artikel von Hanns-Georg Rodek im Kultur-Teil der (konservativen!) "Welt":

Die Bilder sind matt geworden Zweifel am gelobten Land: "Land of Plenty" und "Terminal", neue Filme von Wenders und Spielberg

Vor 16 Monaten schwebte George W. Bush in einer Mischung aus "Top Gun" und Jesus Christus auf einen Flugzeugträger nieder und verkündete "Mission erfüllt". Diese Bilder hatten die Chance, sich im Bewußtsein der Welt als die für diesen Krieg prägenden einzugraben, doch ein Dreivierteljahr später machten Lynndie England und Konsorten diese Chance mit ihren Aufnahmen gedemütigter, nackter Gefangener zunichte.

Die Suff-Exzesse einiger durchgedrehter uniformierter Kleinkrimineller in Abu Ghraib haben in den deutschen Medien inzwischen die weltgeschichtliche Dimension der Beseitigung eines massenmörderischen Gewaltregimes erreicht.

... die brennenden Twin Towers drohen (...) in unserem Gedächtnis von dem Rauch immer neuer Explosionen im Irak verdeckt zu werden. (...)

Hmm... die wahnsinnigen Mordanschläge irakischer Terroristen löschen also "in unserem Gedächtnis" die Erinnerung an 9/11 aus. Eine bestechende Logik: je mehr Terror, desto eher verlieren wir die Erinnerung daran...

Wenn es noch Hoffnung gibt, dann jenseits des Molochs, jenseits des Business- und Überwachungswahns, bei den Menschen im Trailer-Park im Death Valley, die nichts haben und es auch zu nichts mehr bringen werden. (...)

"Moloch" des "Business- und Überwachungswahns" in den USA: hier handelt es sich doch wohl eher um den Moloch des Anti-Amerikanismus-Wahns deutscher Journalisten.

Steven Spielberg dagegen versetzt sich ins Zentrum des Zeitgeschehens, in einen Terminal des John F. Kennedy-Flughafens New York. Es läßt sich kein treffenderes Synonym für das gegenwärtige Amerika denken: Alle sind ständig in Bewegung, das Transportmittel wird permanente Heimat, der Mensch ist reduziert auf den Kunden am Check-in und im Duty Free, der Airport fungiert als Ventil für Erwünschte und Unerwünschte, und das Flugzeug dient als Ausdruck amerikanischer Macht und Verletzbarkeit. Man darf so etwas nicht kommentieren. Jeder Kommentar von außen würde die unbeschreibliche Dummheit dieser Passage empfindlich verletzen.

... aber eigentlich geht es um eine Solidarisierung von unerwünschten Außenseitern ... gegen eine "America First"-Ideologie der permanenten Angst, die alles fremdländische a priori als verdächtig einstuft. ... Das Kontroll- und Überwachungssystem, das Spielberg in aller Ausführlichkeit zeigt, verlangt nach solchen Typen, so wie das Verhörsystem des Pentagon nach Typen wie Lynndie England verlangte.

Es handelt sich hier ausschließlich um die permanente Angst deutscher linker Journalisten, die alles amerikanische a priori als verdächtig einstufen. "...das Verhörsystem des Pentagon (verlangte) nach Typen wie Lynndie England": es ist auch hier eher das paranoide anti-amerikanische Wahrnehmungs- und Beschuldigungssystem der deutschen Medien, das nach Journalisten-Typen wie Hanns-Georg Rodek verlangt.

... das Bild, das Amerika nun von sich bietet, hat ihn (Viktor) nicht zum Bleiben ermutigt. Dies ist wohl der Zwiespalt, den momentan viele Freunde der Vereinigten Staaten durchleben.

Der Gipfel des Anti-Amerikanismus: der Autor verkleidet sich als "Freund" der Amerikaner, um seinen Haßtiraden eine besondere Glaubwürdigkeit zu verleihen.

Und was mußte er auf dem Weg zum Gipfel nicht alles zurück lassen: am schwersten wiegen der Verlust journalistischer Glaubwürdigkeit und des gesunden Menschenverstandes.

Nachtrag: Unglaublich! Niko macht uns in einem Kommentar auf den ultimativen Fehler von Rodek aufmerksam: "Die Ironie in Hanns-Georg Rodek's "Artikel" ist, daß die tatsächliche Geschichte hinter dem Film von Spielberg die eines iranisch-britischen Asylsuchenden ist, der im Charles-De-Gaulle-Flughafen in Frankreich hängen geblieben ist."

I could have sworn that a couple people (Rico?) have posted comments here saying there wasn't anti-Americanism in Germany, only disagreements with Bush. There's so much dissagreement over Bush they obsess on the negativity (whether real, exagerated or made up) of Americans even down to how fat they are.

I remember reading an (Euro/German?) article recently, that I unfortunately didn't save, making the point of how "simple" and "stupid" Americans really are. How they are always
"smiling at you" and saying things like "good morning" for no apparent reason?!?!
And here the author seeks to "explain" the opposite, how venal and foul Americans really are.
The obvious "complexe" remains between the ears of these observers, who continually seek out and create the no win situational minefields for the methaphorical "American" to wade through.

Who can deny most all of this has little to nothing to do with "Americans!" other than their being a convenient rohrschat blot for all the individual failures and woes of a weak, aging and unfortunately declining Europe.
No nation(s) go gently into that dark night and Europe probably will not either. There are so many positive things that we could be accomplishing together but instead old Europe, devoid of energy or new ideas, chooses to define itself by what it is "against."
Let's just hope they do not start another World War on their way out the door.

Though the Nazi period became more and more a taboo, the Germans were at least living and practicing antifascism -and one of them, A.C.Springer, became the meritorious voice of this Germany: Pro-Israel, Pro-America, and, this was no longer a contradiction in those days, ... Pro-Germany.

The United States on Friday congratulated Ms Maathai on winning the Nobel Peace Prize, but tempered its praise over her claims about AIDS.

"We don't agree with that."

The official pointed to a report of those comments published in August in Kenya's daily Standard newspaper, in which Ms Maathai was quoted as saying that HIV/AIDS was created by scientists for the purpose of mass extermination.]

You know, I somehow don't think Africans do need help on the subject of mass extermination, they're good enough on that on their own.

Just a small note for those who don't know anything about the Spielberg film. It is based on a true story. The real man is still in his airport, but it is not JFK. The airport is in Paris and the regulations that keep/kept him there are EU regulations.

In short, the only reason the US is involved at all in the entire affair is in a conscious effort by Spielberg to make this about humans and their relationship to the generic 'system' and not let americans simply dismiss it all as something that happens 'out there' among the heartless and crazy foreigners. If you fly through Charles De Gaulle airport, you might yet catch a glimpse of the man who has most likely been driven (harmlessly) insane by his trip through the EU refugee bureaucracy. After driving him mad so that he is incapable of leaving, they even gave him travel papers.

Die Welt hat sich in letzter Zeit zu einer im allgemeinen antiUS und vor allem antiBush mainstream mitschwimmenden Zeitung entwickelt.
Dieser Artikel ist kein Einzelfall - ich kaufe deshalb seit einiger Zeit keine print Ausgabe mehr - die internet Version macht es auch und ist kostenlos.

"Die Welt" scheint sich selbst überflüssig machen zu wollen: Wer antiamerikanisch getöntes Bush-Bashing möchte, kauft sich dann doch lieber gleich die Nationalzeitung oder die taz oder Die Rote Fahne ... Immerhin sind 15-20% der Deutschen durchaus Bush-freundlich, wäre vielleicht ein Markt für das taumelnde, einstige Flagschiff aus dem Hause Springer. Oder man entscheidet sich dafür,

-neutral und objektiv die Fakten zu berichten,

-mittels "pro" u n d "contra" zu analysieren

-und bei deren Bewertung, Interpretation und Kommentierung in der Regel zwei Seiten zu Wort kommen zu lassen.

Generell: In ein Feuilleton gehört dann und wann Polemik, wegen mir auch dann und wann gegen Fischer, Schröder und, ja auch, wegen mir, dann und wann, gegen Bush. Aber Polemik muss gut gemacht sein, Stereotype wie in besagtem Artikel sind dagegen stumpf gewordene und stumpfsinnig machende Polemik, die nicht zum Denken anregt oder herausfordert, sondern bloß verhetzende Clichés bedient.
Dass ausgerechnet der Schreiberling, der diesen Artikel fabriziert hat, beklagt, Amerika würde keine Bilder mehr produzieren (was immer dieser pseudointellektuelle Schwachsinn auch bedeuten mag), ist schon dreist; dass Bush zu einer Ikone des antiamerikanischen Hasses und Ressentiment geworden ist, ist wohl kaum Amerikas Schuld, vielleicht eher die Verantwortung derer, die lieber Propaganda treiben als zu informieren.

Die Welt war einst ein nobles Blatt, dann, in den 90ern, wurde sie lahme Mittelmäßigkeit, jetzt ist selbst die offensichtlich journalistisch nicht mehr zu erreichen.

Ralph makes a good point when he says that the 20% of Germans who are America- and Bush-friendly represent a currently untapped market in the German press landscape. Unfortunately, entrepreneurial thinking is not particular strong in present-day Germany.
For a while, I was buying the Welt, considering it the last paper to be reasonably free of anti-American bias. This appears no longer to be the case.
On the other hand, in Berlin every kiosk prominently displays not one but three socialist newspapers: junge welt, Freitag and Neues Deutchland. I never see anyone reading these papers on the subway, but they are sold everywhere.

Anscheinend hat nunmehr auch Die Welt diese 20% Zeitungleser aufgegeben - nachdem die FAZ das schon lange getan hat.
Die sogenannten konservativen Blaetter haben wirklich ihren Kompass verloren -

Wenn ich mir allerdings einige meiner deutschen Freunde aus der Industrie - viele davon haeufig in den USA - anhoere, muss ich zugeben, dass dieses amerikabashing - oder besser - amerikahating durchaus auch in diesen Kreisen verbreitet ist (und viele davon sind FAZ Leser und halten sich fuer internationale Oberklasse).

Entrepreneurial thinking does not have to be strong at all. All you need is a small group of hungry kids willing to work hard. The local press will gladly print your paper if you pay them in advance and you can make pretty good money via advertisement. I helped found and run a paper (without subsidy) at university that had a circulation of 10k. Essentially it went to every student. When I moved on, it had advertisements from the US military, movie advertisements, all the classic local advertisers were publishing there.

There's money to be made, you just have to be willing to offer a clear alternative.
