"against an ‘America First’ ideology of permanent fear that is, a priori, suspicious of all things foreign"

A nation of immigrants suspicious of all things foriegn.

I could have sworn that a couple people (Rico?) have posted comments here saying there wasn't anti-Americanism in Germany, only disagreements with Bush. There's so much dissagreement over Bush they obsess on the negativity (whether real, exagerated or made up) of Americans even down to how fat they are.

I remember reading an (Euro/German?) article recently, that I unfortunately didn't save, making the point of how "simple" and "stupid" Americans really are. How they are always
"smiling at you" and saying things like "good morning" for no apparent reason?!?!
And here the author seeks to "explain" the opposite, how venal and foul Americans really are.
The obvious "complexe" remains between the ears of these observers, who continually seek out and create the no win situational minefields for the methaphorical "American" to wade through.
Damned if your nice,
damned if your not so nice.
Damned if you engage in Iraq,
damned if do not engage in Sudan,
Damned if you don't know about the world,
Damned if you do, but don't see the world in the same way Euros do,
Damned for allegedly "creating" hussein,
Damned for overthrowing the criminal hussein,

Who can deny most all of this has little to nothing to do with "Americans!" other than their being a convenient rohrschat blot for all the individual failures and woes of a weak, aging and unfortunately declining Europe.
No nation(s) go gently into that dark night and Europe probably will not either. There are so many positive things that we could be accomplishing together but instead old Europe, devoid of energy or new ideas, chooses to define itself by what it is "against."
Let's just hope they do not start another World War on their way out the door.

The Welt used to be a counterbalance of crucial importance equilibrating left-wing antiamericanism (taz ...): Unfortunately, this former stronghold of pro-western politics is now betraying A.C.Springer´s legacy: May be this is an effect or still a cause, or both in a vicious circle, but there´s a development going on in Germany that really deserves our concerns -the conservatism Adenauer-style is withering away; i.e.: a conservatism not based on antimodernist prejudices denigrating America, not haughtily purifying German culture from a western free-market -allegedly superficial, petty and materialistic- civilisation; but a conservatism grounded on law-abiding decency, on a specific working ethos (acquisitiveness and diligence), on family values, on thriftiness, on education and on a sense for democratic traditions. A conservatism being the heir of 1848-ideas rather than of 1871-ideals, a conservatism reconciling the three aspects in which a man usually reflects upon himself: The German as citizen (Staatsbürger), bourgeois (Wirtschaftsbürger) and Bildungsbürger became modest patriot defending his constitution.
Though the Nazi period became more and more a taboo, the Germans were at least living and practicing antifascism -and one of them, A.C.Springer, became the meritorious voice of this Germany: Pro-Israel, Pro-America, and, this was no longer a contradiction in those days, ... Pro-Germany.

Reminiscence, alas ...

The Kenyan Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai accuses the US of having deliberated engineered the HIV virus to exterminate Africa:

[Nobel peace laureate claims HIV deliberately created
Kenyan ecologist Wangari Maathai, the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize, today reiterated her claim that the AIDS virus was a deliberately created biological agent.

"Some say that AIDS came from the monkeys, and I doubt that because we have been living with monkeys (since) time immemorial, others say it was a curse from God, but I say it cannot be that.

"Us black people are dying more than any other people in this planet," Ms Maathai told a press conference in Nairobi a day after winning the prize for her work in human rights and reversing deforestation across Africa.

"It's true that there are some people who create agents to wipe out other people. If there were no such people, we could have not have invaded Iraq," she said.

"We invaded Iraq because we believed that Saddam Hussein had made, or was in the process of creating agents of biological warfare," said Ms Maathai.

"In fact it (the HIV virus) is created by a scientist for biological warfare," she added.

"Why has there been so much secrecy about AIDS? When you ask where did the virus come from, it raises a lot of flags. That makes me suspicious," Ms Maathai said.

Africa accounts for 25 million out of the estimated 38 million across the world infected with HIV, and the vast majority of infected Africans are women, according to UNAIDS estimates.

The United States on Friday congratulated Ms Maathai on winning the Nobel Peace Prize, but tempered its praise over her claims about AIDS.

"She said (HIV/AIDS) was invented as a bio-weapon in some laboratory in the West," a senior State Department official said.

"We don't agree with that."

The official pointed to a report of those comments published in August in Kenya's daily Standard newspaper, in which Ms Maathai was quoted as saying that HIV/AIDS was created by scientists for the purpose of mass extermination.]

You know, I somehow don't think Africans do need help on the subject of mass extermination, they're good enough on that on their own.

Or like a buddy from Australia just said: "Oh please if we wanted to wipe out the African continent we'd do a far better job than AIDS is doing."

Seriously, why is the USa even blamed for it, after all its the only country that never had colonial holdings in Africa at all?!?

ARD tried to pull off that very same lie about a month ago.

By the way, 'The Terminal' sucks. If anyone was thinking of seeing it, don't bother. Corny, contrived Hollywood nonsense.

Sorry for the shameless self-promotion, but the FOCUS headline ("Kerrys Versprechen zu spät") in relation the Chritopher Reeve's death strikes me as the most distasteful thing to come out of the German media yet.

The thing about Mr. "Welt" writer's ideology is that he probably doesn't realize that people write that way - take desperate shots and wild hail mary passes - when their 'Sell By' date is up.

The fool. He's using a collection of fact-free misconseptions among his readers to tie together a story.

Just a small note for those who don't know anything about the Spielberg film. It is based on a true story. The real man is still in his airport, but it is not JFK. The airport is in Paris and the regulations that keep/kept him there are EU regulations.

In short, the only reason the US is involved at all in the entire affair is in a conscious effort by Spielberg to make this about humans and their relationship to the generic 'system' and not let americans simply dismiss it all as something that happens 'out there' among the heartless and crazy foreigners. If you fly through Charles De Gaulle airport, you might yet catch a glimpse of the man who has most likely been driven (harmlessly) insane by his trip through the EU refugee bureaucracy. After driving him mad so that he is incapable of leaving, they even gave him travel papers.

Hmhh... Tom Hanks as a refugee? Come on. This has 'family movie' and cozy well-feeling written all over it.

BTW, Pitzke too goes at it again in today's SPON. He is probably the only person left on this planet who thinks that painting Bush as a simple-minded cowboy is still an original idea.

If Bush says "Good morning" he is being insensitive to all the people whose mothers died last night.
I offer Kerry to the world. We have no more need for him if we ever had.
I would even support a bill to pay the way of any Democrat who wants to become a french citizen to go there, one way.

Speaking of films and their reviews, no-pasaran had an article on that very subject:

Ralph makes a good point when he says that the 20% of Germans who are America- and Bush-friendly represent a currently untapped market in the German press landscape. Unfortunately, entrepreneurial thinking is not particular strong in present-day Germany.
For a while, I was buying the Welt, considering it the last paper to be reasonably free of anti-American bias. This appears no longer to be the case.
On the other hand, in Berlin every kiosk prominently displays not one but three socialist newspapers: junge welt, Freitag and Neues Deutchland. I never see anyone reading these papers on the subway, but they are sold everywhere.

Amerika/Bush - Israel /Sharon
Unbelievable - but true.

Entrepreneurial thinking does not have to be strong at all. All you need is a small group of hungry kids willing to work hard. The local press will gladly print your paper if you pay them in advance and you can make pretty good money via advertisement. I helped found and run a paper (without subsidy) at university that had a circulation of 10k. Essentially it went to every student. When I moved on, it had advertisements from the US military, movie advertisements, all the classic local advertisers were publishing there.

There's money to be made, you just have to be willing to offer a clear alternative.
