Darauf konnte man wetten: die deutschen Medien übernehmen dankbar die Kritik von US-Medien an der TV-Werbung von Präsident Bush. Ausgesuchte Zitate sollen den Eindruck eines weit verbreiteten Unmutes vermitteln.

"Den 11. September auszunutzen, ist pietätlos"

Es ist die teuerste TV-Wahlwerbung in der Geschichte der USA: Unter anderem mit Bildern von den Trümmern des World Trade Centers versucht George W. Bush die Bedeutung seiner Führung im Kampf gegen den Terror zu betonen. Angehörige der Opfer werfen ihm nun vor, er instrumentalisiere ihr Leiden.

Als geschmacklos kritisieren Hinterbliebene von Opfern der Terroranschläge am 11. September 2001 die neuen TV-Wahlkampfspots von US-Präsident George W. Bush: Die Bilder zeigen u.a. das eingestürzte World Trade Center. "Den 11. September für politische Zwecke auszunutzen, ist pietätlos", sagte die New Yorkerin Monica Gabrielle, die ihren Mann bei den Anschlägen verlor. Der Chef der Feuerwehrvereinigung, Harold Schaitberger, warf Bush "Heuchelei der schlimmsten Sorte" vor. Bush schlachte den "Heldenmut der New Yorker Feuerwehrleute" für seine Wiederwahl aus, während die Feuerwehr unter Geldnot leide.

Die Medien erwecken den Anschein spontaner Aussagen neutraler Zeugen: "New Yorkerin", "Hinterbliebende der WTC-Opfer", "Angehörige von Opfern". Tatsache ist, daß die genannten Zeugen - nur einige wenige Personen übrigens, nicht "viele Amerikaner" - bekannte Anti-Bush-Aktivisten sind.

Harold Schaitberger: "Feuerwehr-Leute unterstützen Kerry als Präsident / Bekanntmachung von IAFF Vorsitzender Harold Schaitberger und Senator John Kerry bei einer Pressekonferenz in Washington, D.C." Anzumerken ist noch: die Feuerwehrleute-Gewerkschaft unterstützte bei den Präsidentschaftswahlen 2000 Al Gore. In den Pressemitteilungen der Gewerkschaft wird regelmäßig Bush kritisiert und Kerry gelobt.

Monica Gabrielle ist ein Mitglied der "Skyscraper Safety Campain", einer Organisation zur Förderung der Sicherung von Wolkenkratzern. Sie ist ganz deutlich einer Anti-Bush-Agenda verpflichtet. Im August 2003 schrieb sie an die New York Times: "On Sept. 11, 2001, our leaders failed miserably. The reason for the failures has yet to be fully determined. Our recovery will not be enhanced simply because the Republican Convention will be held near ground zero. Whatever President Bush and his administration may think, the one important point to remember is this: Since 9/11, they have stonewalled and prevented a transparent investigation of that horrific day. This is the echo that should be reverberating throughout our country."

Und - ach ja, Monica Gabrielle ist auch noch Mitglied von "Peaceful Tomorrows", einer Gruppe, die sowohl den Afghanistan-Krieg wie die Irak-Invasion der Amerikaner bekämpft. Ein wesentlicher Sponsor der Gruppe ist das Tides Center - und hinter der steht Teresa Heinz Kerry, die Frau des demokratischen Präsidentschaftsbewerbers John Kerry.

Es fehlt jetzt nur noch, daß John Kerry selbst in den deutschen Medien auftritt, als "Amerikaner", der seine Bestürzung über die Bush-Werbung bekannt gibt. Man kann nichts auszuschließen...

You could have bet on it: The German media have thankfully taken over the criticism of the Bush TV ads from the US media. Selected quotes are used to convey the impression of widespread displeasure.

“Exploiting September 11 is Disrespectful”

It is the most expensive TV election ad in the history of the USA: With pictures including the ruins of the World Trade Center, George W. Bush attempts to emphasize the meaning of his leadership in the fight
against terror. Relatives of the victims are now accusing him of instrumentalizing their suffering.

The message: I am a leader who also understands how to master a severe crisis. However, for many Americans, this type of advertising goes much too far. Above all the relatives of the WTC victims and the New York City fireman are extremely angry about these spots. … New Yorker Monica Gabrielle, who lost her husband in the attacks. “Exploiting September 11 for political purposes is disrespectful.”
