Even though the dangers to peace from Saddam's Iraq have been removed - the "Axis of Evil" is still alive:

North Korea had developed a nuclear bomb by the end of the 1980s and probably has many such weapons after pursuing its secret programme under the noses of international inspectors, according to defectors from the country.

Ever since President Bush coined the term "Axis of Evil", German media poke fun at it ("Axis of Evil" = "Achse des Bösen"). It was classified as just another fundamentalistic neocon perception, that eventually would prove to be a failure. What the world needed, so the mantra of the German media, was not violent "strong America" rethoric, but understanding and sophisticated policies.

Deutsche Welle:

Only through sensible policies and with the support of the international community can the atomic danger be contained. (Our translation)

And of course: send in the UN inspectors!

Seems like Mr. Kim Jong Il hasn't quite got the message yet. We'll have to work on that, patiently...

Auch wenn die Gefahren, die dem Frieden durch Saddams Irak drohten, beseitigt sind - die "Achse des Bösen" bleibt lebendig:

Nordkorea hatte eine Atombombe Ende der 90-iger Jahre (= ca. 1989) entwickelt und besitzt wahrscheinlich viele solcher Waffen, nachdem es sein geheimes Programm unter den Augen der internationalen Inspektoren verfolgt hat, heißt es von Flüchtlingen aus dem Land. (Unsere Übersetzung)

Seit Präsident Bush den Begriff "Achse des Bösen" prägte, haben sich die deutschen Medien darüber belustigt. Der Begriff wurde als weitere fundamentalistisch-neokonservative Vorstellung eingestuft, die letztendlich scheitern würde. Was die Welt stattdessen brauchte, so das Mantra der deutschen Medien, war nicht die gewalttätige "starkes Amerika"-Rethorik, sondern Verständnis und intelligente Politik.

Deutsche Welle:

Nur mit diplomatischem Fingerspitzengefühl und der Unterstützung der internationalen Staatengemeinschaft wird die atomare Bedrohung durch Nordkorea und den Iran aus der Welt zu schaffen sein.

Und natürlich: schickt die UN-Inspektoren rein!

Wie es scheint, hat Kim Jong Il die Botschaft noch nicht ganz verstanden. Wir werden daran weiter geduldig arbeiten müssen...
