Endlich interessieren sich unsere Medien für die Folter auf Kuba!

Das wurde aber auch nun wirklich Zeit: jahrzehntelang konnte der kubanische Diktator Castro, ein Urgestein des Stalinismus, in seinem Inselreich ungezählte Demokraten in's Gefängnis werfen, sie foltern und quälen, ohne in deutschen Redaktionsstuben Emotionen zu bewegen. Für jede Menschenrechtsverletzung in, sagen wir mal zufallsgewählt: den USA, gab es hunderte in Kuba. Allerdings: für jeden Zeitungsartikel über Menschenrechtsverletzungen in Kuba gab es hunderte Zeitungsartikel über Menschenrechtsverletzungen in den USA.

Aber das ändert sich jetzt. Unsere Medien berichten nun auch über "Folter auf Kuba".

Zum Beispiel die Berliner Zeitung - ein weiteres verdienstvolles Mitglied der Aktion "Unsere Zeitung steht links" - unter dem Titel "Im Niemandsland des internationalen Rechts":

Der 35-jährige Moazzam Begg, Vater von vier Kindern, ist einer von mindestens 20 europäischen Staatsbürgern, die nach Guantanamo Bay verschleppt sind. Ins Niemandsland der Gerechtigkeit, wo US-Gesetze nicht gelten, wo US-Soldaten zynisch von "Folter light" sprechen und wo US-Militärrichter im Auftrag des Präsidenten der Vereinigten Staaten darüber richten sollen, wer für die Anschläge vom 11. September 2001 zur Rechenschaft gezogen wird. Die genaue Zahl der Europäer in Guantanamo weiß man nicht, weil sich die US-Behörden weigern, die Namen der knapp 700 Häftlinge zu nennen.

Hmm... den Namen von Castro suchen wir hier vergebens. Obwohl: ein "Niemandsland der Gerechtigkeit" ist Kuba ja nun wirklich. "Folter light" dürfte es in Kuba aber nur geben, wenn die Spezialisten für härtere Anwendungen gerade auf Betriebsausflug sind. Natürlich "weiß niemand" die Zahl der Gefängnisinsassen auf Kuba, da sich die kubanischen "Behörden" weigern, die Namen der - sicher mehr als 700 - Häftlinge zu nennen.

Morgen berichtet die "Berliner Zeitung" auch sicher einmal über "Folter auf Kuba" durch Castro. Oder übermorgen. Oder vielleicht irgendwann...

Nachtrag: Ich fand beim ersten Querlesen im Archiv der Berliner Zeitung bei der Stichwort-Kombination Folter+Kuba+Castro kaum Vorwürfe an die Adresse von Castro, wohl aber jede Menge Kritik an den Amerikanern wegen der Guantanomo-Gefangenen.

Finally: Torture in Cuba Called by Name!

Finally German media has taken an interest in torture in Cuba!

It was about time: For decades, Cuban dictator Fidel Castro, a dinosaur of Stalinism, could throw countless democracy advocates into jail, torture and abuse them on his island empire with no emotional effect on German editorial writers. For every human right's abuse in, let's randomly select: the USA, there have been hundreds in Cuba. However: for every newspaper article on human right's violations in Cuba there have been hundreds of articles on human right's violations in the USA.

But that is changing now. Our media are also finally reporting on "torture in Cuba."

For example the Berliner Zeitung - a further valuable member of the action ciómmitee "Our newspaper is left-wing" - under the title "In the no-man's-land of international rights."

35 year old Moazzam Begg, a father of four children, is one of at least 20 European citizens who have been dragged off to Guantanamo Bay. In this no-man's land of justice, where US laws do not apply, where US soldiers cynically talk of "torture light" and where US military judges are to rule in the name of the President of the United States who is to be held responsible for the attacks of 11 September 2001. One can't know the exact number of Europeans in Guantanamo because the US officials refuse to name the names of the nearly 700 prisoners.

Hmm... we search here in vain for the name of Castro. Although: Cuba is truly a "no-man's land" of justice. "Torture light" is something that may exist in Cuba when the specialists for the heavier stuff are away on a business vacation. Of course, "one can't know" the number of prisons and jails on Cuba since the Cuban "officials" refuse to name the - with certainty more than 700 - prisoners by name.

Tomorrow the "Berliner Zeitung" will certainly be reporting on "torture on Cuba" through Castro's regime. Or the day-after-tomorrow. Or maybe some day...

Vor einigen Monaten wurden doch etliche Journalisten auf Kuba inhaftiert. Was wurde aus ihnen? Ich habe nichts mehr in den Medien dazu gelesen.

Zunächst freute ich mich, daß die deutschen Medien endlich Castro kritisieren, dann las ich weiter und erkannte, daß es bloß noch ein ahnungsloser Kommentar zu Guantanamo war. Schade, daß deutsche Journalisten ihre Vorurteile bezüglich alles was Amerika tut, nicht überwinden können.

Interessant in diesem Zusammenhang ist, dass es hier in Deutschland (auch anderswo in Europa??) in den letzten paar Jahren eine Art Kuba-Nostalgie gibt. Mir jedenfalls ist aufgefallen, dass es neuerdings auf Kubanisch gestylte Lokale/Restaurants gibt. Mit Che-Guevara-Fotos auf der Speisekarte und solchen Scherzen. Weiterhin sieht man neuerdings wieder frommes Jungvolk mit T-Shirts, auf denen die Ikone Che-Guevaras prangt. Zumindest vor zwei Jahren (ob jetzt auch noch, weiß ich nicht) konnte man hier in manchen Tabakläden (in Ffm) eine Zigarettenmarke kaufen, die "Che" hieß, mit der Che-Ikone auf knallrotem Hintergrund. (Das erinnert ein wenig an den "Führerwein", den man in Italien kaufen kann.)

Kuba scheint immer noch als Projektionsfläche für kommunistische Träumereien herhalten zu müssen. Vielleicht ist deshalb über Kuba eine journalistische Schonzeit verhängt.

Der Kuba-Welle, die in den vergangenen Jahren nicht nur Deutschland erfasst hat, politische Motive zu unterstellen ist doch lächerlich. Das ganze wurde dadurch losgetreten, daß Ry Cooder (Amerikaner) ein paar alte Jungs ausgegraben hat, Wim Wenders dazu den sentimentalen Film lieferte, und man letztlich eine Goldgrube entdeckte, die Gott sei Dank jetzt langsam zu versickern scheint.

"Kommunistische Träumereien"... wohl kaum.. Eher Sehnsucht nach einem diffusen vor-kommunistischen Kuba -- dem von Hemingway, großen Schlitten, Sons, "heißen Rhythmen", ewiger Wärme, Zigarren rauchen und alten, weisen Männern beim singen zuhören. So wie in der Bacardi-Werbung eben. Oder im jüngsten MasterCard Spot. Apolitischer geht's eigentlich nicht mehr.

Was man allenfalls zugeben kann ist: bei Teilen der Kuba-Liebhaber herrscht eine allgemeines Unverständnis für die amerikanische Embargo-Politik und eine Art versteckte Sympathie für Castro -- sicher nicht weil der Kommunist ist, sondern weil er den "Amis" trotzt. Das kann man als anti-Amerikanismus auslegen. Man könnte sich aber auch einmal Fragen, was dieses Embargo noch für einen Sinn hat -- ganz zu Schweigen von der Berechtigung. Aber das ist eine andere Diskussion.

I don't understand. Why is the German media noticing this now? There hasn't been a break in the general series of lies that undergird the German outlook, so I can't imagine what makes them suddenly realize that the Cuban communists are nasty fucks. They've been nasty fucks since 1958 and no one noticed.

You should stick with thinking Fidel is a good guy. It doesn't help to allow reality to intrude on prejudices.

MONSIGNOR RICARDO MEDINA SALABARRIA RESPONDS to Cuban
CHANCELLOR PEREZ-ROQUE And DENOUNCES the TORTURE And
MURDER OF HIS UNCLE AFTER 17 DAYS OF ARREST .

Monsignor Ricardo Santiago Medina Salabarría, general
vicar of the Orthodox Church in Havana Cuba, responded
to the speech made by the Cuban chancellor Felipe
Perez-Roque at the Commission of Human rights in
Geneva last week.

Perez-Roque, in the referred speech had rhetorically
solicited information “on a single prisoner in the
Island who had undergone mistreatment, humiliation,
tortures or murder”.

"I am answering (to Mr. Perez-Roque) with full
responsibility. I am the nephew of Osvaldo Medina
Dulzaides. Osvaldo Medina Dulzaides was vilely
tortured by correction officers of the Villa Clara
penal institution where he had been imprisoned from
July 15th to August 1st of 1994 and ultimately
assassinated. When they gave us his lifeless body it
showed a black eye, a blunt trauma to the solar plexus
and to one of his knees."

Asked Monsignor Medina Salabarría on the cause of the
death of his uncle, established by autopsy which was
practiced at the time, he said that a government
official in full regalia informed him that his
relative had ‘lost his mind’ and then hanged himself
using a bed sheet. Monsignor Medina Salabarría
responded that was lie, and that his family did not
believe such findings. Monsignor Medina Salabarría
continued: "Because I was able to examine the corpse,
I know it did not show symptoms of cyanosis; in
addition, he had a small mark that rather seemed a
burn on the front of his neck. If he had really hanged
himself with a bed sheet the marks would have been
visible all around the neck. I say this responsibly as
a professional nurse which I am ", said the orthodox
priest. The uncle, Osvaldo Medina Dulzaides was 33
years old when he died and left two small daughters
who did not receive any sort of government aid. He was
an industrial engineer who graduated from the Central
University of Las Villas and after spending two years
in prison for attempting to exit the country
‘illegally’ he broke entirely with Castro’s
government. Then he started to work as a taxi cab
driver until finally, in July of 1994, he was arrested
by the police and accused of driving an ‘illegal’
automobile. "Mr. Perez Roque, -continues Monsignor
Medina- yes there are prisoners who have been and are
mistreated, vexed, tortured and assassinated in the
Island, specially political prisoners; my uncle is but
one example. Because of this crime, when I was ordered
priest in 1998 I said that I would raise my voice on
behalf of all the prisoners, and I am not going shut
up ".

Remite la presente el ciudadano cubano, Darsi Ferrer Ramírez, mayor de edad, con número de identidad 69110229321, médico de profesión, estado civil soltero, con residencia en la calle San Bernardino 265 e/ Serrano y Durege, Santo Suárez, mcpio. 10 de Octubre, Ciudad de la Habana. Vengo a presentar la siguiente queja, amparado en la letra del artículo 63 de la Constitución de la República vigente, por los hechos que a continuación se describen.

Siendo el día 19 de Marzo de 2005, encontrándome en mi domicilio, sin haber cometido delito alguno, ante la presencia del ciudadano Frank Delgado Macías y a la vista de vecinos de la cuadra, se personaron Alexander López Meriño, dirigente del Buro del Partido Comunista del municipio de 10 de Octubre, junto a cuatro individuos, de identidad por mi desconocida.

Estas personas irrumpieron en mi domicilio sin mi consentimiento, y procedieron de inmediato a agredirme verbal y físicamente, incluso portando uno de ellos un arma blanca, además, de amenazar de muerte a mi hijo menor de tres años de edad y mi propia persona. De forma violenta destruyeron murales continentes de documentos de las Naciones Unidas, y de opositores y disidentes presos. Al intentar buscar comunicación telefónica para notificar sobre la agresión que fui víctima, estos individuos me persiguieron durante seis cuadras, manteniendo las agresiones físicas, verbales y las amenazas. Situación que hubo de parar por la decidida intervención de la Sra. Irene Martínez Izquierdo, quien me dio refugio en su vivienda.

Como resultado de lo anterior recibí una herida incisa de tres centímetros en la muñeca derecha, próxima a la arteria radial, que pudo ser fatal. También, tengo en mi cuerpo contusiones, hematomas y el daño psicológico asociado a estos hechos violentos.

Sobre las 2:30 de la tarde del mismo día, más de un centenar de personas irrumpieron en mi domicilio portando diferentes tipos de objetos , entre ellos las oficialmente conocidas por “ tonfas”, palos, mangueras, y algunos portaban walkie-talkie para comunicarse. Ello ocurrió en presencia de los ciudadanos Leonardo Jiménez Cabada, Ramiro Rodríguez Rodríguez, y a la vista de vecinos de la cuadra. Esta vez, además, de proferir improperios , amenazas y alentar para que nos mataran, nos golpearon salvajemente a Roberto de Jesús Guerras Pérez y a mi. Intento de linchamiento ocurrido ante la inesperada presencia de la Sra. Andrea Rodríguez, corresponsal de la agencia de prensa acreditada en Cuba, y la protesta de vecinos de la cuadra, quienes alegaban que se trataba de una barbarie increíble el intento de asesinarnos en su presencia.

Las evidencias de los múltiples golpes que recibimos están reflejadas en el certificado de lesiones que se adjunta a esta carta.

Existe el antecedente de que el día 5 de Diciembre de 2004, el Sr. Alexander López Meriño se personó en mi domicilio, junto a otras personas, con el objeto de impedir la realización de una actividad pacifica, y respetuosa de la letra de las leyes vigentes. En esa ocasión, dicho funcionario del Estado violó mi domicilio sin mi consentimiento, para destruir los murales que exhibía, continentes de documentos de las Naciones Unidas y fotos de disidentes y opositores presos de conciencia. Acto seguido, apareció un mayor de la Policía, y me llevo arbitrariamente detenido para la estación policial de Lawton, conocida por “Aguilera”. Allí formulé una denuncia oficial en contra del Sr. López Meriño, por los delitos contra mi cometidos.

El día 19 de Febrero de 2005, hubo nuevamente de personarse el Sr. Alexander López Meriño, junto a otras personas en mi domicilio, con la manifiesta intención de obstaculizar la realización de una actividad pacífica y respetuosa de las leyes vigentes.

Todos estos hechos, que han tenido lugar en presencia de testigos y a la vista de vecinos de la cuadra, han contado con la Anuencia e Impunidad de las autoridades competentes –Seguridad del Estado, Policía Nacional-.

Exijo a la Fiscalía General cumpla con su obligación de velar por el estricto cumplimiento de las leyes, y tome parte ante las graves violaciones cometidas contra mi persona.
