Germany's Socialist Quagmire / Deutschlands sozialistischer Schlamassel

What's wrong with Germany? The country is in deep economic trouble, and a comeback in the near future is far from certain. Why? Over the past three decades German politics have led the country into a socialist quagmire.

I'm often critical of the German weekly magazine SPIEGEL, but once in a while they print something that is worth reading. Last week's SPIEGEL provides a lucid analysis of the economic standstill that plagues Germany. The giant German welfare state has begun to take its toll. The government takes an increasing share even of the wages of low income workers.

Some examples from the SPIEGEL's analysis:

Employee, single, with annual income of Euro 50 000,- (gross). Net income after taxes (income tax, tax for solidarity with East Germany, church (!) tax) and "social deductions" for health insurance, unemployment insurance and pension: Euro 26 400,-.

Wife of a high income employee. Her income (gross) for a part time job is Euro 1250,- monthly. After taxes and "social deductions", her net income is Euro 341,-.

A net wage increase of 50 Euro for an average employee adds up to 150 Euro for the employer, because of a highly progressive income tax system and because of social deductions.

On average, the hourly cost of handicraft work in Germany is 51,- Euro. After taxes, social deductions and company costs the net wage per hour is 8,32 Euro.

Unfortunately, the ordinary German citizen still fails to understand the price of all the social goodies presented him. A quote from George Bernard Shaw comes to mind: "A government policy to rob Peter to pay Paul can be assured of the support of Paul."

Add to that cruel picture the fact that, for historic reasons, Germany's economy is still heavily burdened by cartels, bureaucracy, and all kinds of environmental laws, and it becomes obvious that the country urgently needs a complete overhaul.

BTW: to a certain extent in the past blatant Anti-Americanism in German politics has served the purpose of diverting people's attention from pressing domestic economic problems. As the last election in Bavaria - and the latest opinion polls - prove people don't buy this crap any more. I'm not sure Schroeder will be German Chancellor come January 2004.

Was läuft schief in Deutschland? Das Land ist in größten wirtschaftlichen Schwierigkeiten. Ein Comeback ist in naher Zukunft nicht eben wahrscheinlich. Die Politik in Deutschland hat das Land in den letzten drei Jahrzehnten in einen sozialistischen Schlamassel geführt.

Ich bin ja häufig kritisch zum zum SPIEGEL eingestellt, aber gelegentlich findet man etwas, was sich zu lesen lohnt. Der SPIEGEL der letzten Woche bietet eine differenzierte Analyse des ökonomischen Stillstandes, der Deutschland plagt. Der riesige deutsche Wohlfahrtsstaat fordert seinen Tribut. Der Staat nimmt selbst Niedrigverdienern einen immer größeren Teil ihres Einkommens.

Einige Beispiele aus der Analyse des SPIEGEL:

Angestellter, alleinstehend, mit einem Brutto-Jahreseinkommen von 50 000 Euro. Das Netto-Einkommen nach Steuern und Sozialabgaben beträgt 26 400,- Euro.

Die Frau eines Spitzenverdieners hat einen Teilzeit-Job mit einem Brutto-Gehalt von 1250,- Euro monatlich. Nach Steuern und Sozialabgaben bleiben ihr netto 341,- Euro.

Eine zusätzliche Netto-Zahlung an einen durchschnittlichen Arbeitnehmer in Höhe von 50,- Euro kostet den Arbeitgeber - wegen des stark progressiven Einkommenssteuer-Tarifs und der Sozialabgaben - 150,- Euro.

Die durchschnittliche Handwerker-Stunde kostet 51,- Euro. Nach Steuern, Sozialabgaben und betrieblichen Kosten bleiben dem Mitarbeitern netto 8,32 Euro.

Unglücklicherweise versteht der Durchschnitts-Deutsche immer noch nicht, daß all die sozialen Wohltaten ihren Preis haben. Man erinnert sich unwillkürlich an ein Wort von George Bernard Shaw: "Eine staatliche Politik, die Peter beraubt, um das Geld Paul zu geben, kann sich er Unterstützung von Paul sicher sein."

Wenn man jetzt weiterhin berücksichtigt, daß die deutsche Wirtschaft historisch bedingt immer noch stark belastet wird von Kartellen, Bürokratie und einer Vielzahl von Umweltgesetzen, dann ist klar, daß das Land dringend eine komplette Überholung braucht.

Übrigens: in gewissem Umfang sollte in der Vergangenheit der offene Anti-Amerikanismus in der deutschen Politik von den dringenden Wirtschaftsproblemen ablenken. Wie die letzen Wahlen in Bayern – und die aktuellen Umfragen – zeigen, lassen sich die Leute von diesem Unsinn nicht mehr beeindrucken. Ich bin nicht sicher, daß Schröder im Januar 2004 noch deutscher Kanzler ist.
