Christoph Luetgert: Bush and Bin Laden Enemies of the Free World

(By Ray D.)

In case you missed it, here is another of the German media's Schroeder-lapdogs blaming Osama bin Laden and George W. Bush in the same commentary on the ARD-Tagesthemen (Germany's main state-sponsored evening news program) for terror and insecurity in the world. This commentary was given to mark the fifth anniversary of 9/11. If anyone honestly believed that the anti-American stupidity in the German media had abated, here is more proof that it hasn't!

Here a translation submitted by one of our readers, edited by us. If you live in Germany, this is how your German public broadcasting tax money is being put to good use!:

Anchorwoman: Christoph Lütgert of the Norddeutscher Rundfunk, on the lessons and impacts of the 9/11 attacks.

Christoph Lütgert: Some may believe it an outrage to mention the names Osama bin Laden and George W Bush in the same breath, but I believe both have made our world much less safe. With his fight against terror, Bush was a willing marionette of out-of control neo-conservatives in the USA, and at the same time a help in fulfilling the objectives of the terror godfather bin Laden. Bush is primarily responsible for making the geopolitical consequences of September 11, 2001 worse than the catastrophe itself.

The war against Iraq, itself is a crime against international law, with no end in sight for the chaos, bloodshed and civil war. The recent Lebanon war would not have been thinkable without the Bush inspired radicalization of the Islamic world, likewise the threatening nuclear behavior of the terrible Iranian President Ahmadinejad.

As time increasingly passes, the accomplishments of the previous Red-Green (Schroeder-Fischer) administration, which distanced itself from this disastrous and unspeakable President, as the majority of Americans now do, are becoming increasingly evident. The current Union (CDU/CSU) administration under Angela Merkel should not be spared the reminder that it took her far longer. Perhaps, looking at the positive, it is all the more significant that we now see Chancellor Merkel and other prominent members of her administration clearly denouncing the abhorrent elements of Bush’s fight against terror, the human rights violations of Guantanamo Bay and CIA prisons.

It will take the free world a long time to repair the damage done by Osama bin Laden and George W. Bush, if that can be accomplished at all. And it (the free world) will be repeatedly challenged in its fight against terror not to give up freedoms that it in fact wants to defend.

Also, Tibor pointed out the Luetgert commentary and a response to it in Handelsblatt. At least someone is responding. (Hattips Tibor and Marko. Thanks also to Marko for hi-tech support.)

UPDATE: We now have one of the most egregious examples of anti-American propaganda at ARD on video HERE. Another example HERE as well.

UPDATE #2: This is not the first time we have dealt with Mr. Luetgert. We caught him lying to the German people last year as well.

State of the Union Speech: Finally, One German Who Supports the U.S. in Iraq

I don't know how many Germans attended President Bush's State of the Union speech.

But I definitely know of at least one, and he even supports the U.S. in Iraq! No wonder he got a good seat...

As to the reaction of the German media to the speech, it's so far largely matter-of-fact reporting. An exception is this comment by Washington correspondent Carsten Schmiester of Norddeutsche Rundfunk (part of the vast German public radio network): "President Bush said in all earnest that the state of the nation is good. ... The state of the nation isn't good...Bush's war against terror not won...unfulfilled american dreams in education, better schools, health policies, lesser dependence on foreign oil...Republicans involved in corruption scandal...economic growth in last quarter 2005 faltered dramatically...".

Yawn. Another negative Washington correspondent assessment of America (scroll down page).

I guess this will set the tone for the commenting in the German media. Let us know what you read, see and hear.

Note from Ray: Looks like SPIEGEL ONLINE decided to bypass its own "Amerika Korrespendenten" and translate a negative editorial from American author Tim Grieve. Not surprisingly, there is absolutely no balancing opinion in sight. So much for tokens...

NDR's Major League Bias

(By Ray Drake)

A while back, David made mention of an NDR (North-German Broadcasting, a state-owned public broadcasting organization) report entitled "Patriotische Gefuehle: Die Medienszene in den USA" or "Patriotic Feelings: The Media Scene in the USA". The report is such a classic, textbook example of how the German media reports and distorts facts about the United States that it is worth a much closer look.

We started by translating the entire report into English exclusively for our readers. That can be viewed here.

Part 1: Christoph Luetgert's Sordid Stadium Story

As proof of the "Bush clan's" enormous, "all-encompassing control" and influence throughout America, we are presented with NDR-Chefreporter (NDR executive reporter) Christoph Luetgert's assertion that, as a German journalist, one is required to call the White House to receive permission to film Texas Rangers stadium. The report states:

"How large the influence of the Bush clan is in the entire country was also experienced by a German TV journalist. The Texas Rangers Stadium in Texas. Here began the career of Bush as a businessman. The club did not want to grant permission to film. Christoph Luettgert*, NDR executive reporter: “When we made a request there we were told that we had to ask the White House for permission. I mean, that is an outrageous story. That would be something like if I wanted to film in the soccer stadium of FC Bavaria Munich and the club managers of Bavaria Munich would say to me I have to first call and ask at the Chancellor’s office in Berlin. I mean such an all-encompassing control, well such an all-encompassing censorship is unimaginable in Germany.”

When Davids Medienkritik contacted the Texas Rangers we were told that, with few exceptions, camera crews from anywhere in the world are permitted to film at Texas Rangers stadium with the permission of the Texas Rangers media relations office. This simple process involves the camera crew contacting Texas Rangers media relations, making an appointment and sending in copies of their journalistic credentials. That’s it.

The primary exception to the rule would be filming a game in progress, something not allowed without the express written consent of Major League Baseball. This is standard operating procedure not only at Texas Rangers stadium, but at all Major League Baseball stadiums in both the United States and Canada. (Anyone who has ever watched or listened to a baseball game on television or radio knows this because it is repeated during every game.) The same rules apply to almost all other sports stadiums worldwide, including most German and European sports venues. It is a simple matter of copyright law and has absolutely nothing to do with the White House or President Bush, nor would anyone have ever been asked by the Texas Rangers or any other sports team to call the White House simply for permission to film a game at which the President of the United States was not actually physically present.

So this naturally left me wondering what Mr. Luetgert could have possibly been talking about. When I asked Ms. Jessica Beard of the Texas Rangers communications department why he might have been asked to contact the White House for permission to film the stadium, she told me that this could only have happened if Mr. Luetgert wanted to film an event at the stadium actually physically attended by the President of the United States or if the NDR reporter wanted to film about Mr. Bush’s work at the club and use actual pictures of the President. She stated that only in such specific instances, directly involving the safety and/or right to privacy of the President and his family, would a journalist be requested to directly contact the White House for permission to film.

In fact, Ms. Beard pointed out that foreign camera crews regularly request and receive permission from her office to film at Texas Rangers' stadium to cover players and to interview fans before and after games. She went on to say, “We want press for our beautiful stadium, locally and worldwide.” Ms. Beard also pointed out that a German news crew would have absolutely no problem receiving permission to film the stadium as long as the filming did not take place during a game or impact the safety or privacy of the President or anyone else at the stadium.

As a trained, experienced journalist, Mr. Luetgert must have known that it would have been easily possible to film at Texas Rangers stadium, or virtually any other sports stadium in the United States, without White House permission. So why does he make it seem otherwise? Why does he intentionally misrepresent the facts by omitting important details? Clearly, our star German reporter fails to mention several key specifics about exactly what it was that he wanted to film. He further compounds the misrepresentation by making a fatally flawed comparison to Bavaria Munich stadium. Luetgert tells his audience that his experience is comparable to a journalist wishing to film a major German soccer stadium being told to contact the German Chancellor's office for permission.

In so doing, Mr. Luetgert and NDR have created a patently false and sweeping impression in the minds of the German audience: Namely, that foreign journalists working in the United States wishing to film a sports stadium are forced to request permission directly from the White House. President Bush is ridiculously portrayed as having an iron grip on filming at all American sports stadiums. This is reinforced by Luetgert's closing assertion that: "such an all-encompassing control, well such an all-encompassing censorship is unimaginable in Germany."

Clearly, this is no innocent mistake or oversight on Mr. Luetgert's part. It appears to be an intentional misrepresentation of the facts in an attempt to deceive the audience to achieve the desired negative image of the United States and President Bush. Ironically, the segment of the report in which the NDR reporter makes his assertions about Texas Rangers Stadium is entitled: "Manipulation from the Highest Level?"

"Manipulation from the Highest Level?"

Indeed: A particularly cynical title considering Mr. Luetgert's own outrageous manipulation of the facts. This is certainly one of the more devious and overt examples of bias we have uncovered so far. Mr. Luetgert ought to be called-out on this one, such all-encompassing journalistic incompetence should be that which is unimaginable in Germany.

If you wish to contact NDR's television division with your thoughts on "Patriotische Gefuehle", you can email them at: fernsehen@ndr.de. Christoph Luetgert can be contacted at: c.luetgert@ndr.de

(Hattip: Alex N.)

*Update: One of our alert readers pointed out that NDR couldn't even spell "Luetgert" correctly in its report. The name only has two 'ts' not three. I have made the adjustment in our posting, but I left it misspelled in the translation of the original because that is how it appears (with an umlaut in German of course). Additionally, another reader emailed and pointed out that George W. Bush's career as a businessman began in the oil business, not with the Texas Rangers as stated by NDR. The President's online biography also contradicts NDR on that point.

Article note: For the record, Texas Rangers stadium is also known as Ameriquest Field.

TV Menu of the Day

As usual: raw, juicy anti-americanism on German tv. The real thing.

Today (Wednesday May 4, 2005): two regional public tv channels - both are nationally distributed via satellite - with millions of viewers each informed the German public about the evils of America.

Wefight WDR (Westdeutscher Rundfunk): "Why we fight - The good wars of the USA". 90 minutes prime time bashing of Bush, the U.S. government, the rest of America, Iraq policy, all of U.S. foreign policy, you name it. No surprise the flick won the "American Documentary Grand Jury Price" at the Sundance Festival 2005 (described here as an "I hate America lovefest"). Of course: loads of praise from left-wing media outlets (1, 2.)

If this documentary hadn't spoiled my evening, this definitely did:

FlagNDR (Norddeutscher Rundfunk): "Patriotische Gefühle - Die Medienszene in den USA" (Patriotic Feelings - The Media Scene in the USA). Topics: Bush clan manipulates media; U.S. government pressures journalists into self-censorship; U.S. media uncritically supported Iraq war for patriotic reasons; USA a "police state"; in comparison to the U.S.: ethical foundation of journalism in Germany.

Sometimes I hope someone would wake me up and tell me it was just a bad dream.

But it isn't a bad dream. It's media reality in Germany in 2005.

And counting...

German Media Reactions to Bush Victory: "Bush Derangement Syndrome" Alive and Well / Reaktionen der deutschen Medien zum Wahlsieg Bushs: das "Bush Derangement Syndrome" in voller Blüte

(Deutsche Version am Ende des Beitrags)

(Translation by Jim Cohen)

The election success of President Bush is causing a renewed outbreak of the “Bush Derangement Syndrome” in the German media. Anti-Bush tirades and anti-Americanism go hand in hand.

AP Germany:

John Kerry is for many the exact opposite of George W. Bush. The defeated presidential candidate is seen as both cosmopolitan and literate.

Carsten Schmiester, Washington correspondent NDR:

Let the man (Bush) cope with the consequences of his mistakes himself – or not. Then at the next election people will probably look back with horror at eight years of Bush, remember that fair loser Kerry and his rather reasonable proposals and hopefully at last give the Democrats their long overdue chance. A nice dream, granted, and a European one, too, but the current electoral reality can’t be tolerated otherwise.

Stern:

The world looks with bewilderment at the US.... The current economic upswing belies huge problems.... The consequences of these policies are dramatic: the state is going broke.... Since November 3, 2004, George W. Bush can consider himself to be truly elected. However it might be a rude awakening for his country.

SPIEGEL ONLINE:

He forced a war on this world with threadbare arguments, which the people didn’t want. He split the Western world, although the war against terrorism can only be won together. He overrode rights whenever it suited him. With his false rationale for war he deceived millions.

ZDF Editor-in-Chief Brender (ZDF is one of the two German public tv channels):

The groaning about the outcome of the US election is deafening. Had George W. Bush stood for election in Europe, he would have been blown out of office with drums and trumpets.... Four more years with this man! You Americans, what have you done to us? More brusqueness, more going it alone, more wars? The groaning is deafening.

Until now my impression had been that the groaning was for Chancellor Schroeder – and the massive unemployment, for which he is responsible, the ever increasing national debt (although Germany doesn’t have to pay for a war in Iraq!), as well as the zero growth of the economy.

How wrong can you be...

BTW: Here are other examples in our blog for the German media's post-election "Bush Derangement Syndrome":

Update 1: And here's the hysterical reaction of the Austrian media...
Update 2: I love this comment to the Brender quote (see above) : "Us Americans, what have we done to you? Uh... for one thing, you're not Nazis anymore. Sorry about the brusqueness..."
Update 3: Check our posting "Thank you, USA".

Jews In German Public TV / Juden im deutschen öffentlich-rechtlichen Fernsehen

(Deutsche Version am Ende des Beitrags)

Gabi made me aware of this anti-semitic video clip of NDR, a regional German public TV channel. The clip is to be shown on the programme Extra3 on Thursday, April 29, 2004, at 11pm. It is supposed to be a satire... (Update: I learned in the meantime that the clip was actually already shown on Extra 3 on April 22, 2004. Extra 3's had initially listed the clip for April 29.)

You don't need to speak German to understand the message of the clip: awful Ariel Sharon suppresses the poor Palestinians. Now, that's the standard bias in the German media, so this by itself doesn't deserve special attention.

But have a closer look at the scene with a Jew sitting laughing on the back of a Palestinian, and the one where a Jew stands next to a Palestinian who holds a sign "Doof" (Dumb).

ndrjew1   ndrjew2

German Public TV's perception of Jewish dominance over Palestinians

This is an old tradition of anti-semitism: depicting Jews as using their alleged intellectual superiority to take advantage of more simple minded folks.

And NDR addresses another traditional German anti-semitic cliché: poking fun at religious jews.

ndrjew3

Quote: "Look: there are a few settlement homes, erected before your very eyes.  And just like that the dear Israelis with the funny curly sideburns moved in for the Palestinians. All was well..."

A couple of years ago this clip would not have been shown on German TV. Times are a-changing...

Anti-semitism used to be a right-wing speciality in Germany. Yet, there aren't that many right-wing anti-semits left in Germany. However, anti-semitism of the left is healthy and active and can be studied in the context of "criticism" of Ariel Sharon and Israel's policies in the German media. It's a bias of the German media, not of the German people, as yesterday's posting proves.

Update: The "Rundfunkrat" is the supervisory board of the TV channel NDR. Chairman is Lutz Mohaupt. This is his e-mail-address. In case you want to let Mohaupt know your feelings about the anti-semitic rantings of NDR, please refer to the German version of this posting.

Panorama: Manipulative Bush-Hasser

Da sind Hillary Clinton ("It is clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare, and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons") und Jacques Chirac ("What is at stake is how to answer the potential threat Iraq represents with the risk of proliferation of WMD.") ganz anderer Meinung.

Conway hat aber auch gesagt: "I think that the day might well come when we ask the right question of the right person and we open a panacea of weapons storage and that type of thing. So seven weeks is probably not enough time to look at a country the size of California and come to the conclusion that they simply do not exist here, especially if you consider that the regime had ample experience attempting to hide those things as much as they were visited by the inspectors."
