The American Dream: Alive and Well
This is something that Marc Pitzke and all of the other German media cynics who love to crow that the American dream is dead should read. It directly contradicts the dearly-held stereotype that the United States is a land that offers little hope of advancement to its poorest citizens.

Starting out on the streets with only $25 in one's pocket, getting into an apartment, buying a car, and accumulating savings. I guess that's what the Germans mean by "American conditions!"
The difference in Germany being that the kid goes on the dole, and stays there. Please correct me if I am wrong, Tropby or Phillip.
At the same time, many or most on the streets don't have the smarts and/or the proper mind set to do what that guy did to move up.

This is a common experience with immigrants as well. For those who say there is no opportunity in America I ask: Why is it that millions of immigrants come here every decade with very little money, and in a few years they own a business and their own house? Answer: They work hard and sacrifice everything for their business enterprise. This goes across racial lines. It could be a Nigerian with dark skin or a light-skinned Pole. They have very little back home, but the one thing they do have is intelligence and a strong work ethic. That's all you need in America.
Too many Americans, and dare I say it most Europeans, have lost that work ethic. So they whine and complain when they don't get a cush desk job with lots of vacation benefits and a fat pension to retire at age 50.
