"Set beauty on stun."
"Aye, captain."

OK, so I'm a nerd for remembering it's Star Trek's 40th anniversary.

Gee, look at that noble, beleaguered look on the crack journalist's face. And not a hair out of place...

Looks like posed photojournalism didn't start with Lebanon.

Your articles are generally very good and insightful. This one, making fun of Helen Thomas' appearance, is just base. Please stay on track with constructive and factual criticism, and leave the right-wing fanboyism to your readers' comments.

Helen Thomas is just base.

But at least we finally understand Rather! Thanks for bringing this to light, it certainly suggests a theory:

Iron, when struck with a rock in the presence of a magnetic field, will become magnetized.

Dan Rather's head, when struck with a rock in the presence of 68ers...

Peter R: "This one, making fun of Helen Thomas' appearance, is just base."

Like the portrait of Dorian Gray, the face of Helen Thomas reflects the evil in her soul. This woman lost all sense of fairness in reporting decades ago, and it shows on her face.

I had to look up Helen Thomas in wikipedia and found that:
At the July 18, 2006 White House press briefing Thomas and Tony Snow had a heated exchage, which begins:

TS: Helen.
HT: The United States is not that helpless. It could have stopped the bombardment of Lebanon. We have that much control with the Israelis.
TS: I don't think so, Helen.
HT: We have gone for collective punishment against all of Lebanon and Palestine.
TS: What's interesting, Helen --
HT: And this is what's happening, and that's the perception of the United States.
TS: Well, thank you for the Hezbollah view ...

Now I can understand...

I know that Sandy P. will again accuse me of "having gone native," but just as Peter Reaper I fail to see what good it does to take a swing at Helen Thomas' looks. I am sure you wouldn't consider it fair game if liberals ridiculed Newt Gingrich for his looks or Rick Santorum for his last name. Not to mention the (not only) German press comparing GWB's looks to a chimp--the odds are pretty good such a comparision would end up as a prime example of anti-Americanism on DMK (I am actually rather sure it already has, however, I don't have the time to perform a search for it right now). Or, in the German context, criticism directed towards Michel Friedman is usually analyzed as containing antisemitic resentment. Why aim at looks if you have plenty of substantial points to attack? In sum, you can certainly do better than that.

As a more general point, I might not have gotten the memo because I haven't been following DMK too close over the years. I do remember, however, that there was a time when DMK explicitly claimed to be bipartisan, wouldn't give a recommendation for the presidential election, and this website's sole (and righteous!) concern was anti-Americanism in the German media. It even still says so in the header, right? Against this background, I wonder whether posts like this one and the one on Fleischer ripping Carter denote an official acknowledgment that DMK is (also) about anti-Republicanism, be it in Germany, be it in the US. Such an expansion of DMK's mission would of course be perfectly legit, however, then it might be more honest to say so instead of hiding behind a allegedly bipartisan veil.

Addendum: The passage was meant to read: "criticism directed at Michel Friedman's looks."

She looks better when she isn't smiling.

tibor: "I fail to see what good it does to take a swing at Helen Thomas' looks. I am sure you wouldn't consider it fair game if liberals ridiculed Newt Gingrich for his looks or Rick Santorum for his last name."

Instead of commenting on Gingrich's looks, the liberals did something more viscious: they launched 63 criminal and misdemeanor charges against him while he was the Speaker of the House, all of which proved to be false and done merely for harassment to stop him from making progress in Congress. The only thing he was found guilty of was talking a course he put on video while making a speech. This wasn't against any law, though, it was only a breech of good taste.

I will confess that they haven't complained about Mr. Gingrich's looks... he is a rather attractive man... nor have they made comments about Santorum's name. BUT they ROUTINELY attack Ann Coulter and other conservative pundits for their looks, saying how ugly they are, etc. Ann Coulter is on a more level scale with Helen Thomas, being a writer (and a lawyer). They not only attack her for her looks, but also pull BS like this. Even in this photoshopped atrocity, you can still see that Coulter is a very beautiful woman. Rush Limbaugh is STILL called "fat" even though he hasn't been an ounce overweight for more than ten years.

So what you are seeing here, in discussing the looks of a woman who is GENUINELY ugly, is not restricted to the right at all... but actually more of a retaliation against the left for their ugly attacks.

Correction: "The only thing he was found guilty of was talking a course he put..." should read, "...talking about a course..."
