As long, as I am here, I am more and more sure that many Germans (e.g. "Die Spiegel" readers) are living in some kind of DDR-bis, where blind anti-americanism and obssesion about real and false America faults is a core of public debate and contrary opinions are just silenced by editors of mainstream media.

DDR: Reloaded. Indeed.

The rag is counting on no one asking easily verifiable proof of Josh's statements [who, where, when... ] and the readers lack of knowledge of US military protocol.

Josh could have filed for objector status, asked to be discharged, or even lip-locked his CO for a quick way out. The US military doesn't actively hunt for deseters, they simply dishonorably discharge them once they show up on the radar [police records, tax filings, etc...] with no prison sentence for said desertion [if they committed a crime during their time in uniform, thats another story].

Also, US soldiers do not "blindly obey" any command given to them. If they are given an unlawful order [eg. shoot those POWs] they are obliged to disobey and report the officer/NCO who issued it as most soldiers are well aware of the ROE. Discrediting US soldiers as being mindless-killing-dupes in the EU is as old as the cold war, but it sure satisfies the appetities who want to believe it. Nothing new here.

Playing soccer with the heads of dead enemies? Not really a new story .... during the Kosovo conflict, when the German goverment were seeking for more public support to their involvement in the region, minister Rudolf Scharping claimed that the Serbian soldiers enjoyed playing soccer with the heads of dead Kosovans. Although he never provided any proof, the story was so gruesome that neither the media or the public doubted his words.

Is this like Lamp Shades???

The odd part is that the only adult males that play soccer in the US are immigrants and members of MLS. Now if the claim was that the Americans had used these heads to mark the bases in baseball then the smear would have been maybe one inch closer to possibility.

Ok, the article itself contradicts that Iraq is like Vietnam.

In Vietnam, our soldiers just cut the ears off the enemy's body. Oh, and they killed babies.

Maybe it's the topography. It's difficult to play soccer in a jungle.

I mean, really, any 'responsible journalist' would have investigated such obvious contradictions.

This is so tiresome. At what point will the U.S. finally conclude that it is time to get out of NATO and let the Germans and other Eurabians fend for themselves? We've been Europe's enablers for long enought - Old Europe is a losing proposition and won't heal itself unless it finds the will to do it on its own. Projecting Germany's own psychological disorders on America may be entertaining but we Americans have other things to do.

Pat,

Not only is soccer low on a GI's list of things to do with his free time....but has anybody realistically tried to kick a 10 meter shot with a human head into a goal?

The human head does not live up to as much abuse as an inflated leather ball. Hasn't any body ever seen the comedian Gallagher's act?!

The odd part is that the only adult males that play soccer in the US are immigrants and members of MLS.

Nah, not really. The suburban 'soccer mom' was supposedly going to be the important demographic in the 1996 election, remember? The American kiddies playing soccer in '96 are plenty old enough now, ten years later, to be GIs. Not that the Die Zeit article isn't ridiculous, but just to set the record straight...

Did Die Zeit happen to mention that Josh Key's former colleagues never backed up any of his outrageous claims? I don't know what Key is really after, but it doesn't include the truth. I mentioned what Key said a few weeks back to my son (who actually is a combat vet and was based in Ramadi) and all he could do was laugh at the idiot. In any case, Geroge M made the obvious point of how long will a human head last when used as a soccer ball?

"But the traitor possesses an amount of boldness and defiance that makes heroes out of men,"

Doesn't this sound familiar? Does the name Mary McCarthy ring a bell?

Treason = Whistleblower = Hero

That is the logic of the left.

"...how long will a human head last when used as a soccer ball?"

Let's ask the wise ol' owl. He told us how many licks it takes to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Roll Tootsie Pop.

Nah, not really. The suburban 'soccer mom' was supposedly going to be the important demographic in the 1996 election, remember? soccer moms have been around a long time, even I played soccer as a kid (i am 34)

but like he said, adult males stop playing soccer. In fact, we stop at around 15, unless we make the team in high school.

Because any boy that still plays soccer after that point (and is now awesome and on a team so that they consider him a fellow athelete) is looked at rather skeptically by his peers. i was on cross country in high school. Actually that wasn't respected either, even though we won the State meet almost every year.

sorry I put the closing tag in.

argh I meant "not" not "now"

pimf

Playing soccer with a human head would be rather difficult and could bring harm to the participants. According to movie Jerry McQuire, a human head weighs about pounds: not too good for a soccer ball.

Why not interview al-Zarqawi, he has a penchant for collecting human heads. Or are German journalists skitish when attempting interviews with him?

Better to keep to the line...

Is playing soccer with a dead person's body parts considered a "human rights" violation (everything else in this world seems to be)? If so, I'd think some EU commission would be all over this. Should we take the apparent lack of an EU investigation into this outrageous allegation as evidence that no one takes it seriously? Or -- much worse -- should we take the lack of reaction to this as evidence that Die Zeit readers accept these sorts of things as "not out of the ordinary" and entirely plausible?

Or, has the EU been burned so many times now, and expended so much time and money chasing chimeras, that they've just lost interest in these sorts of things?

I thought that this story sounded familiar. An American deserter testified at his deportation hearing in Canada that the soccer story and other atrocities he saw while deployed in Iraq caused him to desert with his wife and four children. He offered no corroborative testimony and was denied asylum last month.

www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A64205-2005Mar24.html

Sorry, I really messed up my comment and the citation. It was a Jeremy Hinzman who was denied asylum. While Joshua Key, with the same lawyer as Hinzman, is still applying for asylum. Hinzman made many of the same charges that Key did, but also without any proof offered. Key also is on very shakey legal ground as Canada might welcome a draft resister or conscientious objector but draws the line at asylum when these deserters were volunteers and not draftees.

Someone please tell me that this "'Die Zeit'" is the German equivalent of the National Enquirer, and that no one takes it seriously. Please...

"The US military doesn't actively hunt for deseters, they simply dishonorably discharge them once they show up on the radar [police records, tax filings, etc...]"

hmmm you know what came into my mind with your mentioning of "hunt" ? Isnt that exactly the kind of job of our Feld-JÄGER? :)

Don't be surprised that Germans project everything Nazi onto Americans. That's how Germans deal with their evil past. Aber Natürlich. Ask Dr. Freud.

PacRimJim

What a bullshit, I dont think anyone played football with heads back then. There were standardized procedures for everything, including the execution process. As regards the amount of disorder and irregularities, Germany is the opposite of barbarian.

Dave, you are correct about no one playing football (soccer) but I would point to joe's comment and I would back you up on the standardized procedures.

This is another blood libel. Nothing really new here.

@Dave
Whether or not Germans played football with Jewish heads, Germans did make lampshades from Jewish skin; Germans did pull gold from Jewish teeth; Germans did experiment on Jews; Germans did steal Jewish possessions; Germans did starve Jews; Germans did shoot Jews and kick them into mass graves; Germans did massacre enclaves of tens of thousands of Jews, in the Warsaw Ghetto and elsewhere; Germans did burn Jews in ovens, Germans did kill hundreds of thousands of Jews with Zyklon B, a poison gas. I could go on...though perhaps I should, because you seem to have forgotten the relatively recent German past. Then again, it's easy to forget the death of 6,000,000 Jews, isn't it.

PacRimJim

You sound really bitter. Anyhow, thats more than half a century ago, so lets get over it!

@Dave

PacRimJim may sound bitter, and his comments certainly negate garydausz's claim that "no one in this blog has ever used nazism as an argument for german behaviour", but his point is well-taken. You, on the other hand, sound like a Neonazi, and not for the first time.

"Anyhow, thats more than half a century ago, so lets get over it!"

Unbelievable! Simply, unbelievable. We've got a simmering conflict between several of the worlds major religions stemming from events that happened *centuries* ago and Dave thinks we should forget about what is one of the single most horrific, criminal events in world history -- even while some of the parents and grandparents who directly participated in this horrific event still walk the earth -- because it happened more than fifty whole years ago.

Sorry, Dave. It's going to be a lot longer than 50 years before anyone gets over it. That's a legacy that you and a lot of other folks are going to have to live with for a long, long time.

But that is not the demographic group the American Warrior ethos springs from, and Jacksonians which form a large part of the military, would be more likely to play Football, American Football and not Soccer.

Your comment can be interpreted in two ways:

a) You wanted to be offensive. In that case I wont grant you the honor of any further response.

b) You wanted to call me something, you need good proof for. This includes defining what a neo-nazi is, and proving that I am such. To me, this is obvious nonsense, but I will await your answer. If you are not willing to prove or cannot admit the mistake you made, I refer to a)

Regards

"But that is not the demographic group the American Warrior ethos springs from, and Jacksonians which form a large part of the military, would be more likely to play Football, American Football and not Soccer."

Dan, I have to disagree. A lot of the military guys I know played soccer as kids and soccer is a big sport on many of the bases throughout the services. If I were to pick a sport that the "American Warrior ethos springs from," I would pick wrestling. That "mano a mano" type of activity appeals to those with the warrior ethos.

@not-my-cousin Dave: Look, here is the problem. Okay, yeah, all the Nazi stuff was half a century ago; there is hardly anyone left alive who had anything to do with it. And, yes, I do not believe in tarring children with the sins of their parents. But today's German ethos seems to have taken this principle and stood it on its head. It goes like this: "Because our ancestors committed the Holocaust, we know what evil is; therefore we are morally superior to everyone else and our moral judgements are beyond question." If you don't believe that the Nazi "original sin" condemns the descendents, than you can't possibly believe that it sanctifies them either.

But this seems to be the approach that Germany is taking. Combine that with the general predjudice that has existed in Europe for centuries to regard North America as barbaric and uncultured, and, well, you come up with stuff like this severed-head business. If it were any group of people other than Americans, the utter stupidity of it would be immediately apparent to any newspaper or magazine editor. But it seems that when it comes to America, a majority of all Germans are willing to put their logic and reasoning facilities on the shelf and just go with whatever belief is popular. The question that Americans want to know is: why?

Hear that? It's the sound of crickets coming from the former concentration camp near 'not my cousin Dave's' house.

Chirp, chirp...

I like the sound of crickets when turning a bratwurst on a barbecue grill^^

Aw relax. They're just getting back at us for the old Belgian Milkmaid stories. But they're too wussy to have artists'lurid illustrations, like we did. Still, they seem to have got the melodramatic prose down. Keep at it, Zeit. And remember, U"bung macht den Meister.

"Because our ancestors committed the Holocaust, we know what evil is; therefore we are morally superior to everyone else and our moral judgements are beyond question."

Unfortunately that's exactly what many Germans think.

What???

US troops playing... (gasp!) SOCCER???

The horror of it all! Oh, the humanity...

Isn't this just a slight variation on the Afghanis playing polo with Soviet heads? Hey, pick your villain, localize your sport, and repeat.
