Deutsche Medien verfallen in konvulsivische Zuckungen über den Truthahn in den Händen von US-Präsident Bush in Bagdad:
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Bushs Truthahn war nur Deko
FAZ: Die Bagdad-Reise eine Luftnummer? ("Auch aus Bagdad selbst fällt jetzt ein Schatten auf die Thanksgiving-Feier des Präsidenten mit seinen Soldaten.")
Berliner Zeitung: An der Truthahnfront ("Mehr als sechzig Amerikaner wurden allein im November im Irak getötet. Das schlägt auf den Appetit.")
ZDF/dpa: "Kritiker verwiesen aber darauf, dass die Bilder von Bush inmitten der jubelnden Soldaten bald verblassen könnten, sollte er seine Politik nicht ändern."
Nur um die Dinge richtig zu stellen: der Truthahn war echt - er war eben nur nicht zum Verzehr gedacht, sondern schmückte als Dekoration das Festessen. Das soll ja häufiger vorkommen, bei großen Gelagen. Der Vorgang gewinnt hierzulande eine Bedeutung, die es mühelos mit der der ersten Mondlandung aufzunehmen vermag... Was sagt uns das über die intellektuelle Gewichtigkeit weiter Teile der deutschen Medienlandschaft?
Dabei haben unsere Medien den allergrößten Bush-Skandal noch nicht einmal bemerkt...
Ach ja - auf eine andere Meldung zu Bush kann aufgrund des Mediengetöses um die Truthahn-Dekoration verständlicherweise nur ganz nebenbei hingewiesen werden:
FAZ: "Eine Umfrage ergab einen Anstieg der allgemeinen Zustimmung zu Bushs Amtsführung auf jetzt 61 Prozent - kurz vor dem Husarenflug nach Bagdad waren es fünf Prozent weniger."
In der Tat: nach einer Umfrage des Annenberg Public Policy Center der University of Pennsylvania hat Bush in mehreren Popularitätskriterien deutlich zugelegt. Und während deutsche Medien - sofern sie die Umfrage überhaupt beachten - die Image-Verbesserung Bushs auf den raffinierten Truthahn-Trick zurückführen, erkennt das Annenberg Center noch weitere Gründe:
"Die Verbesserung kam im Nachgang zu seinem Überraschungsbesuch bei amerikanischen Soldaten in Bagdad sowie weiteren guten Wirtschaftsmeldungen, sowie der Verabschiedung des Medicare-Medikamenten-Gesetzes, das er nachdrücklich unterstützte. ... Die Umfrageergebnisse in den vier Tagen nach Thanksgiving zeigten im Vergleich zu vier Tagen vorher eine zunehmende Zustimmung zu seiner Führungsstärke als Präsident, eine Zunahme der persönlichen Sympathie, mehr Zustimmung für seine Politik im Irak und sogar für seine Wirtschaftspolitik. Die Zustimmung für ihn als Präsidenten stieg von 56 auf 61 %, während die Ablehnung von 41 auf 36 % fiel. Außerdem stiegen auch die Umfragewerte für Bush für eine Reihe persönlicher Aspekte, besonders bei der Frage, ob es richtig sei zu sagen, er kümmere sich um "Leute wie mich" und ob er "kenntnisreich" sei."
Das sagt doch alles über diese Amerikaner: betrachten den Bush als "kenntnisreich" ("knowledgeable")!! Einmal mehr müssen wir unser Bedauern darüber äußern, daß der naive Durchschnittsamerikaner sich weigert, die tiefschürfenden Analysen smarter deutscher Medien zur Kenntnis zu nehmen...

Just to set things straight: The turkey was real - it just wasn't prepared to be eaten, but instead to serve as decoration for the holiday meal. Certainly nothing unheard of at such large banquets. The event has gained a significance in Germany that might easily be compared to the first moon landing... What does this tell us about the intellectual seriousness of wide segments of the German media landscape?
At the same time our media didn't even notice the biggest Bush scandal of all...
Oh yeah - because of the huge media uproar surrounding the turkey decoration, the other news on Bush has been understandably pushed out of the headlines and far off to the side:
FAZ: "A current poll showed an increase in the overall approval of Bush's administration to 61 percent - shortly before the daredevil flight to Baghdad it was five percent less."
Yes indeed: According to a poll carried out by the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania, Bush showed a clear increase in several popularity criteria. And while German media - to the extent that they even notice the poll - link Bush's improving image to the refined turkey-trick, the Annenberg Center recognizes several other reasons:
"The improvement came in the wake of his surprise visit to American troops in Baghdad and continuing good economic news, along with the passage of the Medicare prescription drug bill which he strongly supported. ... Polling on the four days following Thanksgiving, compared to the four days before, showed increases in approval of his handling his job as president, liking for him personally, for his handling of Iraq and even for his handling of the economy. Overall approval of Mr. Bush's handling of his job went from 56 to 61 percent, while disapproval went from 41 to 36 percent. Moreover, the public's rating of Mr. Bush on a variety of personal traits also improved, especially on the question of whether it was correct to say he "cares about people like me" and whether he was "knowledgeable.""
That says everything about these Americans: They view Bush as "knowledgeable!!" Once again we must express our regret that the naive average American refuses to give recognition to the profound and deep analysis of the smarter German media...
