German Ministry of Finance on Iraq: “No objective reason for debt relief”
In a recent article, SPIEGEL ONLINE reported that the German Ministry of Finance stated “that no Arabian oil producing
country has ever been given debt relief by the German government.” The ministry therefore saw “no objective reason for debt relief” for Iraq.
Chancellor Schroeder's recent promise to relieve a portion of Iraq's debt was interpreted to be purely a gesture of “reconciliation with the USA.”
An unbelievably miserly, short-sighted and arrogant attitude when you consider how much money the Allied countries pumped into Germany to rebuild the devastated nation after World War II. The ideologues in Germany's Socialist SPD and Green parties are making this look like Germany is doing the USA and the fledgling Iraqi democracy an incredible favor by even considering debt relief.
In fact, it is Germany's duty as a democratic nation and in its own national interest to do everything possible to help Iraq develop into a stable democracy and prevent it from falling into anarchy or dictatorship. The reluctance to help the USA is nothing more than a face-saving reflex on the part of Germany's left in both government and the media. It seems that any concession made to the US has to be accompanied by snide remarks and bogus justifications so that the anti-war crowd won't have to admit in the slightest that they were wrong to oppose toppling Saddam Hussein´s murderous regime.
For years, the German government and German firms profited from lucrative business deals with Saddam's government, supplying the dictator with everything from bunkers to chemicals for his bombs. During the 1990s they looked away, unable and unwilling to act as Saddam violated countless UN resolutions and brutalized his own people. Now that Iraq has a real chance to develop into a democracy after decades of misrule and tyranny, Germany's ruling left (many of whom opposed German reunification) are once again
on the wrong side of history. Instead of playing a statesmanlike leading role in the rebuilding of Iraq, the German Socialist-Green government continues to conduct itself as a wounded, petty child, forever seeking to justify its policies and re-fight a battle it has long since lost on whether to go to war.
